Peregrine Farm News Vol. 13 #16, 6/2/16

What’s been going on!

Our kingdom for some sun!  Flowers won’t bloom and tomatoes won’t ripen, argh!  The only good things are the temperatures are a bit more moderate and the newly transplanted peppers have had the perfect conditions to get over the shock of planting.

Two busy weekends ahead.  This weekend is the big The Farm to Fork Picnic Weekend featuring three events in 3 days, including a talk by Deb Eschmeyer from Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative on Friday in Saxapahaw (sold out), a dinner at “The Durham” with Sam Kass, President Obama’s former personal chef and assistant White House chef on Saturday and the always amazing Sunday Picnic.  We are paired with Brendan Cox and Oakleaf restaurant, it will be great tasty fun!

Next Sunday the 12th, we are doing the first Farmer and Chef Mashup at the Midway Community Kitchen, with Al from Al’s Burger Shack to raise money for Heavenly Groceries.  We are thinking of it as a “Sunday dinner” with lots of side dishes from vegetables from the farm and other good things.  $65 with wine pairings, it will be a really good time.

What’s going to be at the market?

Did you donate to RAFI?  Let’s talk this week.  If you have RAFI thanks you!

We are down to the crispy and sweet Summer Crisp lettuce in red and green and green Little Gem.  Still some really nice Escarole.  Beautiful Lacinato/Dinosaur/Cavalo Nero Kale.  Plenty of the various Radicchio’s with round red, some of the speckled variety and the heavy, less bitter, Sugarloaf, great for salads or for grilling.

It is Fennel Fest, get it while it is perfect!  A few more Beets with the bullseye striped Italian Chioggias, Red and Golden too.  Cilantro, Dill and Italian Parsley.  Basil!  Green Onions and the first of fresh Long Red of Tropea (Torpedo) onions.  Baby Leeks.  More Cucumbers.  Cosmic Purple and Orange Carrots too.

Slowly the flower department fills.  Beautiful tall Larkspur (annual delphinium).  The first of the awesome Campanula (Bell flower).  Fragrant Stocks.  Delicate Sapponaria.  Sunflowers.  Amazing Bouquets.

As a reminder if there is anything that you would like for us to hold for you at market just let us know by e-mail, by the evening before, and we will be glad to put it aside for you.  Just so you know, sometimes not everything listed will be at the Wednesday market.

Hope to see you all at the market!

Alex, Betsy and Jennie
